On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "severe" category.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Several parts of the capital registered an AQI over 500, which equals ten times the safe level recommended by the global health authority.

In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1,800, representing fifteen to twenty times above healthy standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Developments

Since 2020, authorities had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly haze that covers the capital as colder weather begins.

Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city administration petitioned the judicial authority to request a modification of the ban.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been criticized by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and public health".

Judicial Verdict and Reality

Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, the court complied with the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Many air quality sensors throughout Delhi registered air quality spiking around the night hours to some of the worst measurements recorded during the festival in at least the past three years.

Regional Effects

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants coming from across the border following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the capital have continued as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the problem showing no improvement.

Near Diwali, the concentration of toxic particles in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak levels ever documented in China's capital, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated city.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

This crisis in the city is caused by a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in nearby states of farming communities.

Within these states, agricultural workers regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, producing toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air descends.

Medical and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple investigations.

This pollution leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can even lead to cancer.

Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k early deaths each year in the capital.
